The diaphragm made of plastic or rubber is a very important part in the vacuum pump. Because the diaphragm must form a closed seal between the inner and outer cavities of the pump to complete an efficient pumping process. The edge of the diaphragm must be smooth and polished, not rough or uneven. The laser cutting process is able to meet the requirements of these material applications, providing high-quality trimming, improving product consistency, and reducing the edge damage that may be caused by mechanical cutting of the diaphragm. Laser cutting diaphragm can provide good cutting edge quality, and at the same time can reduce the risk of damage caused by mechanical cutting. For this application, it is required to cut a central mounting hole in a 1mm (0.039) thick diaphragm made of layered neoprene and polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon®). The hole diameter is 22.9mm (0.9'). The cutting process uses a Synrad 80 W laser mounted on the XY platform, equipped with a cutting head with a 2.5 focal length lens, which can provide a focused spot of 0.1mm (0.004'). And use CDA (clean and dry air) as an auxiliary gas, sprayed through a 0.9mm (0.0345) wide nozzle at a flow rate of 100 PSI to reduce the harm of the melt to the lens. In this way, we can complete the cutting at a cutting speed of 74mm/s (175inches/min). The final cut edge is very smooth, and the amount of melting is small.
